Looking forward, just over a third (34%) of respondents surveyed plan to make changes that will affect their payroll calculations in the next 12 months.

In the mid-term, the most mentioned innovations that businesses want to implement in the next 2 years was the integration of payroll and benefits into one platform or app (14%). It was followed closely by employee data analytics, which was cited by 13% of respondents.

There seems to be appetite for organisations to improve their employee experience by integrating payroll and benefits into a single app as well as implementing employee data analytics.

Somewhat surprising is the number of respondents who said that they would be introducing AI. For all the talk in the media about AI use in business, only 4% of respondents currently use AI in their payroll operations and only 8% plan to implement AI functionality in the next 2 years. A further 8% plan to implement Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to their payroll.

There is a huge opportunity here. AI and RPA have the potential to help organisations reduce payroll errors and repetitive manual activities, which was the biggest pain point highlighted in our survey.
